I watched this movie with no knowledge whatsoever about the history of the movie. All I know that Serenity is based on television series called Firefly. The reason I didn't know the show before-hand was because the show was cancelled before I even took notice. And then I watched the movie with a fresh thought and an anticipation. And I wasn't dissapointed. It took me a while when watching this movie to get to know the characters and the storyline, but I hung in there.
The story is about a bunch of rebels on board the spaceship 'Serenity' who are avoiding The Alliance, some type of goverment who runs things in the world. Human beings are scattered around the planets, and many futuristic spaceships and planets are being discovered. Beside the Alliance, they have to face the human cannibals called Reavers who wreak havoc throughout universe. The Alliance is looking for River, a psychic girl who aboard the ship with her brother, Simon. It's up to Serenity crew to protect them and facing adventures.
This movie is best described as an intergalactic western that doesn't require of its TV roots for you to go along the ride. Cleverly written with fast scenes and directed by Joss Whedon, the man who responsibles for Buffy:The Vampire Slayer series and Angel series, is an enjoyable action-futuristic adventure that is packed with witty dialogues, humors, great casts and nice special effects. One thing also I really enjoyed; there is no freaking alien whatsoever. Finally; a space and futuristic movie without weird alien whose trying to take over earth, and also make human the hero. Nope, this movie is about human beings -- with their flaws and various differences background, cultures, and stories.
Serenity lead by this absolutely awesome charismatic handsome guy named Mal. Yeah, I went overboard with his description. But I can safely say that he really is charming and really appears all over the silver screen. Mal is like a new type of Indiana Jones. Seriously, I love him. When he said, "I aim to misbehave.", my heart just pounding. Other colorful bunch in the ship are also really great addition casts whose performances are delightful. Chinese is the main language after English, so they use Chinese swearing most of time. These characters have barbed sense of humor and reluctant heroes persona. Watching this movie is like watching a western movie, set in the futuristic space. Yeah, so it's a bit like space cowboys; with its gun fighting, bar saloon fighting, and all the heroic theme. It's not boring, although I needed to understand the concept at first, until I realize it doesn't matter anyway, it's an enjoyable piece of film. The set looks real, not too futuristic -- it seems like a not too distant future. They're still wearing T-Shirt and jeans, and one of the city looks like futuristic Hong Kong. It's a fresh new idea, groundbreaking. But this is not a movie for everyone. Not many people like sci-fi movie, although this isn't all about sci-fi. So it depends on everyone's taste to watch this.
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
