Tim Burton is a weird man. Every of his single movie always surprises me, yet I expecting it. You know, the whole weirdness. Like an onion, with lotsa layers, each layer contains new level of weirdness. This movie put a new meaning of necrophilia, if you know what I mean. Heh. I mean, damn. For the love of the dead, I was a bit squirmish watching this movie.
A man named Victor (Johnny Depp) is to marry a woman named Victoria (Emily Watson). But he jumbles his vows and goes into the woods to practice. But when he finally gets it right, he says his vows correctly and places the ring on a weird looking twig in the ground. Then he is whisked to the Land of the Dead by a Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter) claiming to be his rightful wife. Victor has to sneaks his way out and marries Victoria.
I do enjoy the movie, because of its originality and the stop-motion animation. I know Tim Burton's movies are always dark, gothic and fun...in a weird way. I keep mentioning weird in my sentence. I can't help it. The characters are well developed, something that rarely happens in animation. The Corpse Bride is a tragic figure of a woman who desperately love a man for the sake of love itself. She falls in love with Victor just because he "promises" her to marry her. Her back story is also tragic; she got killed by a man when she was wearing her wedding gown. The revelation of who killed her is predictable long way before everyone could see it, and I was already guessing. Audiences will feel her pain when she cries and the emptiness she feels when all she needs is love. Although Victor and Victoria are meant for each other, I couldn't help but rooting for him and the Corpse Bride to be together because they have so many thing in common...in a dead and living kinda sense.
Danny Elfman, the composer, once again brings the tone of the movie darker. He really juxtaposes the music of this movie. I noticed when the music in the Land of the Dead seems cheerful and happy, whilst the Land of the Living seems angsty and moody. So it is nice. This movie is not for kids. This movie is for adults who still have have a heart of a kid. Not for everyone, but entertaining enough.
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
