I generally don't like chick flicks. And I read the book first. And I'm not exactly a big fan of Cameron Diaz. But sometimes I admit that I should not watch a movie based on the actors. I was surprised that this movie is actually very nice. I was very moved how the storylines just flowing like a sweet champagne, and I enjoyed it very much.
Rose (Toni Collette) is a sensible, cautious frump of a lawyer. Her sister, Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is a screw-up dylexia who leeches off others. The only similarity between them is their shoe size. After Maggie betrays her sister by sleeping with Rose's boyfriend, Rose kicks her out of her life. Maggie finds herself looking for help to her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) she never knew. Being apart, the two understands each other and themselves.
A bittersweet study of family ties, boasting wit, class and emotion. Not at all what you'd expect from a movie about girls and shoes. After the disaster of the movie The Sweetest Thing and Charlie's Angels, I usually just steer away from Cameron Diaz's movies. Those movies insult my intelligence. Although I do occassionaly like no-brainer movies, those movies made me questions her selection of movies. Not this time, though. She made a right choice.
The dialogue is real, the characters are real and the settings are real. These are people and families and relationships that we can all relate to. The script proves that most family dysfunction is the result of poor communication, not bad people. Regrets can eat away and just become part of the fabric of a family. Bluntly, this is best work Cameron Diaz has ever committed to film. Toni Collette matches her note for note, taking a more intimate, internalized journey of responsibility and frustration. To see these characters grow up and realize their value is a thing of acting beauty. The sisters have a complex, realistic relationship, and the story poignantly describes other family dynamics as well.
i haven't read the book, but after wathcing the movie, I WAAAANTTT!!! Anyway, i sort of prepared myself for a stupid blonde movie, but i turned out to be in love with it. Everything is so natural. I don't have any sister, so I envy them.
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
Welcome to my humble weblog, a place to quench your addiction of movies. Enjoy your stay. Sometimes it's okay to be addicted to movies. PS: Beware of my brash review and language. I have a crazy obsessive compulsive behavior of watching movies. I called it being passionate. LOL. Grab some popcorn, and have a nice day! By the way, you can click the boxes at each reviews to watch the movie trailers. Enjoy!
