Pan's Labyrinth / El laberinto del fauno

Which world do we wanna live in? The real world, or the fantasy world where everything could happen will happen? It depends on our choice in life; I don't think there is a correct answer for that, because both world mirrors each other. It's how we look at them in prespective.

During Spain Civil War in 1944, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her pregnant mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil) are sent to the country to meet Captain Vidal (Sergi López); her step-father and new husband of her mother. Ofelia found an ancient labyrinth behind her house, and discovers a Faun (Doug Jones). The Faun informs her that she was actually Princess Moanna from the Underworld Kingdom, and gives her tasks to proof her royalty. Mercedes (Maribel Verdú) is a servant and also a rebel spy, becomes her friend in the real world. She tells Ofelia not to trust a Faun. Directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Some people mistakenly think that the movie is a children movie, but this is certainly is NOT. The plot is very cruel, dark, gloomy, and not serene. Sometimes it so intensely cruel and bloody and also mercilessly real, it's hard to watch and be shocked with the violence in this movie. The movie dwells with two parallel lines; one is about the dark and terrible reality war with its battles, executions, and tortures -- the other is about dark fantasy with its spooky and frightening world. It isn't a bedtime story. It's an adult fantasy world with its darkest reality. I freaked out to see the cruelty of Captain Vidal, who resembles Hitler; a murderous, ruthless villain with no emphaty left. I freaked out to see the sinister Faun, who resembles the devil; a manipulative, charming character without a certain morale. If you were in Ofelia's shoe, which one do you choose?

The film has a style all of its own. It's dark, it's haunting, it's mesmerizing. The alternate reality is so richly satisfying and so surreal, it couldn't have been dreamed up any better. It is, a fairytale for adults. For within its fairies and creatures, this film is also an unflinching and grim portrayal of war and oppression. It's disturbing, and at times even difficult to watch. A political movie told through the eyes of a young girl. Those two elements collide with such force that you may even be looking for your breath during the film's more intense sequences. The depth to which this film is able to reach is remarkable and rare by today's standards, it's something that is genuinely touching and heartbreaking at the same time. Although I think the filmmaker seems teasing with the idea that the fantasy world just in the child's imagination, or maybe the real thing. You decide.
