Okay, so what's wrong with this movie? Why I think this is not good enough? Maybe I'm too nitpicking, or maybe I demand satisfaction from the money I spent buying the movie ticket...or maybe it's just not good enough. I didn't have any expectation at all, although it suppose to be an interesting movie. It is an interesting, so to speak. But the whole genre is got confused with style of directing which does not mesh with the storyline. I am blaming you, Michael Bay.
Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility in 2019. Like all of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment, Lincoln hopes to be chosen to go to the "The Island" - reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. But Lincoln soon discovers that everything about his existence is a lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are actually human clones. Lincoln makes a daring escape with another clone named Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson).
Now, I know most of Michael Bay's movies are intentionally a summer fun blockbuster-action-pop corn movie type. Nothing's wrong with that, I actually enjoyed Bad Boys...until the sequel came out. Bigger, louder, mindless...and those are actually the good qualities. This movie however is trying to distinct itself from the mindless action flick, and try a new territory which is sci-fi drama. You'd expect a film ala The Matrix which combines sci-fi with action. This film fails to deliver that.
The movie starts with drama and the whole shrouding mystery...until Michael Bay has itchy finger and going buck wild. Fuck the developing drama, he leaps over and BLOWS SOME SHIT UP! My. Gawd. What the hell? The whole chasing cars and escapism situation which his style of directing is very long, very loud, and every logic just goes out the window. Spinning moving camera with the actors' close-up is used so many time in his movies, it becomes his signature. I know his style. He likes to romanticizing his movie, which I think it's great. Not this movie, though. What happen to the plot? Never mind, I guess it got left behind somewhere between the exploding cars, exploding helicopters, jerking of camera, and explosion that lasted almost the entire movie. It's a bombastic mess!
I'm so scared what this man will do to an upcoming live-action movie based of my beloved favorite cartoon The Transformers. I don't want him to ruin it! For this movie, everyone is blaming everyone because of the flop. I mean Scarlett Johanssen is okay, although I do agree she's not an action movie star. She's more a drama girl. How dare Michael Bay blaming her for the flop of his movie? Hello, dude. Stick to the action film, not sci-fi. You need to be a geek first, not flamboyant. Just look at Batman & Robin for storyline development from hell. Positive thing though, yes I do like the special effect like the futuristic city and cars. There is a moral message in this; how human being now are arrogant and playing god. But the message is lost somewhere between the action scene, and it's a damn shame.
It's over the top on some ocassions which made me feel bored. And worse, cos I watched in on a giant screen, the-too-many-flash-scenes gave me an eye contraction! I actually think it's an okay movie overall. Oh well... I am not that hard to please anyway, hehehe...
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
Welcome to my humble weblog, a place to quench your addiction of movies. Enjoy your stay. Sometimes it's okay to be addicted to movies. PS: Beware of my brash review and language. I have a crazy obsessive compulsive behavior of watching movies. I called it being passionate. LOL. Grab some popcorn, and have a nice day! By the way, you can click the boxes at each reviews to watch the movie trailers. Enjoy!
