I was a bit dissapointed watching this film, because I was half-expecting to see the original series which was an icon back in the 80s. Infact, it seems I was watching a whole new story which separate itself from the series. Why bother naming it "Miami Vice" when there is no actual Vice storylines?
Detective Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrel) and Detective Ricardo Stubbs (Jamie Fox) are doing undercover police work in world of drug smuggling after a leak in F.B.I force them to get thrown into a dangerous Columbian drug cartel in Havana. They meet Isabela (Gong Li), a personal right hand of the cartel boss, Jesus Montoya (Luis Tosar), and a manipulative Jose 'Loco' Yero (John Ortiz). Sonny falls in love with Isabela, while Stubbs is having a relationship with his co-worker detective Trudy Joplin (Naomie Harris). Directed by Michael Mann.
The thing is about this movie, it is really different and unrecognizable from the original TV series. Gone the whole glittering hoo-haa and glamour, with the essence of fun like music, the night club, the ladies, the men, the fashion, the biting dialogue, the satire and the dark comedy, all gone. And I won't call this an action movie, but it is more a drama. Well, it supposedly dwell with the relationship between characters; that is why we see more talking and sex scenes. Don't get me start with the sex scenes; it's pretty boring. I feel like I was watching a documentary about D.E.A way of life, because instead of the whole dramatization of police work, it's all about drugs and cartel. I dissagree with the whole Miami Vice thing, 'cause it was hardly located in Miami and more about Columbian drug trafficking. The movie might as well be called 'Columbia Traffic'! I hate to say this, but "Bad Boys" was much better.
The movie departure from the campy and more tongue-in-cheek humor of the television series, gives more edge and putting a sinister nature of drug trafficking. The first fifteen minutes is a good solid Miami storylines, like about prostitution and night life in Miami. But afterwards, it strays away from it and suddenly shift gear into something else, which made me say, "What the fuck?". There are no chemistry between the actors, I don't believe they are friends and partners or whatever. Everyone seems fighting for solo screen time, I could actually feel their egos. And how dare they only give Justin Theroux as Detective Zito three freaking lines??? This movie reminds me of a better TV series of "The Shield" which has similar way of showing the police works. Everyone acting is a bit meh, except Gong Li who spots a Columbian accent. Look, Michael Mann's direction is usually good. I like "Collateral", and this movie might be better if it's not about Miami Vice, have different actors, and different storylines. Just sayin'.
