Well, the reason why I watched The Lake House it's because of Mr. Nunu a.k.a Keanu Reeves. Come on, everyone knew I LOVE him. Hahaha. What's interesting about this movie is that I already seen the original, which is a Korean movie called Il Mare or Siwoare, and we'll compare it - shall we?
A man named Alex (Keanu Reeves) / Han (Jung-Jae Lee) is moving into a new house by the lake / apartment and found a letter inside a mailbox sent by the previous tenant named Kate (Sandra Bullock) / Kim (Ji-Hyun Jun). They begin to correspondent regularly, and surprise to find out the only way to communicate is through the mailbox and they are separated by two years of time. Apparently Kate/Kim lives 2 years in the future, and Alex/Han lives 2 years in the past. Both of them are falling in love, and must unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance.
I actually liked this movie. I saw it with a group of friends. Imagine my surprise when Keanu Reeves was somewhat good in this. He was actually very good. Save a few instances (He catches a cold and does a really bad sneeze, it was laughable. What a FAKE sneeze!), he was natural and darn handsome. While indeed it showed the story as it was in the original, anyone who've seen Il Mare would agree that the American portrayal was nowhere near the mood, the loneliness and longing of the characters in the Korean version. But I must say that both Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock looks like Asian themselves; I mean look at the poster! The characters they play and the way they play them are genuinely likable. Each of these actors seemed perfect for the part and when they were together they radiated genuine attraction and caring for one another.
The blithe alteration in the time line without consequence should make science fiction fans groan in pain. I mean, time paradox everyone! How in the hell these two got together in the end? They are separated in two years time, and it seems hopeless. But forget the plot hole, and just enjoy the romantic drama. If you like "Frequency" starring Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel, you might like this one. A beautifully filmed movie. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful. This movie has an element that become a special present for viewer who love a beautifully design things. But more than the story, and more than the strength and beauty of the film's stars, what impresses is the way the story is told: through ravishing colors, perfectly composed images, amazing cinematography, even beautiful music. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie with an open mind and an open heart.
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
