That's it, I will never have a yacht cruise or ride a boat again. I hate ocean. There's no way I'm aboard a big ship, just to get drown! In some way, this movie is not bad. Sorta.
Poseidon is a magnificent cruise ship. During the New Year's celebration aboard the ship, a huge rogue wave hit the ship and turn it upside down. An ex-Marine named Dylan (Josh Lucas) lead a bunch of people aboard to escape; an ex-New York Mayor named Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russel), his daughter Jennifer (Emmy Rossum), her fiancée Chris (Mike Vogel), a gay architect named Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss), a single mother named Maggie (Jacinda Barret) and her son, Connor (Jimmy Bennet), an illegal passenger named Elena (Mia Maestro), a waiter named Valentin (Freddy Rodriguez), and a hustler named Lucky Larry (Kevin Dillon) are trying to find a way out. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen.
I've seen the original one, and I have to tell you that storyline wise, the original one was boring and the new one is action based and not boring. BUT characters wise...the original one was better and the new one reeks. Man, several times I hoped that most of the characters just die already! The kid annoys the hell outta me, with his stupid kiddy innocent voice and constant appearance that everytime he appears, I want him to drown or got hit by something. There's no in-depth character development, so the storyline seems just flies like that. The movie seems so fast, like there's no introduction whatsoever. I just sat down, and BAM! It goes like THAT! The movie is so action-packed, and there are some sad moment like literally almost made me choke, even the couple next to me were sniffing. But this movie is not Titanic, which I think had more in-depth character development. I actually care what happened with the characters in the movie Titanic. In this one, nah - Not so much. And that telling us something.
The movie could be WAY much better if they have time to write down the character backgrounds and developments, instead just vacuum us into a mindless action. One thing I've noticed that the actors are white, beautiful, and thin -- compare that to the original one when there were variety of colorful people with different background and people were actually care to what happened to them. Shelley Winters, anyone? The only performance I like was from Stacy Ferguson alias Fergy from Black Eyed Peas as Gloria, who delivered good song and final acting scene when she got killed. Au naturale, heheh. Don't make me start with the cheesy dialogue: "I need you to tell me, that you love me." Gag me with a spoon. Barf. The ending also dissapoints me, I mean if they wanted to make it like the original one, make it good please. Why bother making a remake when people don't care? Overall, if you're looking for great action movie, watch it with a bucket of popcorn with your friends.
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
