One of the best and underrated Martin Scorsese's movies, in my opinion. I watched this movie when I was in high-school. Didn't like it at first because it was too violent. But when I watched it again these days, I really appreciate the storylines, the acting, the drama, the whole thing that made this movie great. Absolutely jam-packed with powerful performances.
Sam 'Ace' Rothsein (Robert DeNiro) is a Mobster's greatest gambler businessman. They pointed him to run a casino business in Las Vegas, called 'The Tangier'. He's a very good businessman and tries to keep the business legit. He falls in love with a gold-digger named Ginger (Sharon Stone). His best friend, Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) arrives in Las Vegas to keep an eye of Ace by the Mob's order. But he has his own ambitious agenda that soon disrupts Ace's life. Although Ginger married Ace, she still loves her pimp, Lester (James Wood), and soon also have an affair with Nicky. Their life changes like a fallen dominoes. Directed by Martin Scorsese.
To those of you who said that this movie is bad...jeez, you don't know what you're missing. Sure, it has been compared to Goodfellas, but I prefer this movie better than that one. The strong performances really the main crop in this movie, and I just feel energetic watching this film. This movie almost has it all. Acting is at its finest, the direction is excellent, the story is interesting and it has a good plot, however, this movie is not for everyone to see. The amount of violence is very high and there's a lot of swearing in this. I personally don't mind with the violence, because it really dwells with the characters in the movie. I thought these characters are very interesting aspect of human being in life. Rules of the jungle; is not who is the strongest, but who can survive. And how greed really can change people, not to mention people's course of life. This film grows on me, and I can't keep my eyes off from the screen because I feel the characters really out there and I wouldn't miss out what happened. Even the small characters seems big on the film, because they were given the best acting and performances. Love Don Rickles in this film. He's a comedian, and yet he could be serious actor here. Awesome.
This film is almost perfect, especially with the music from the 70s and 80s, really giving the good vibe. I love the details in this movie, spare no expenses. Just give Martin Scorsese an Oscar, damn it! Why can't people appreciate his movies, and let him win once in a while? The actors are superb; I loooove Joe Pesci in this movie. Not only he's terrifying, but he's charming also. Damn, what is it with bad guys? Robert DeNiro also great, I can't get enough of it. He's not my favorite actor, can you believe it? But I love his work. Sharon Stone for once gave the best performance I've ever seen. Just incredible and awesome. If she could just act this way, instead of being a diva and starring in shitty movies. Watching this movie is like watching a fast-cut documentary, and it really keeps me in place. Although the movie is very long, I didn't find it boring. Time flies so fast when you're having fun. Excellent movie, just takes some time to watch. If you are into mob-things, you will surely like this one.
HoneyBee May 28, 2006 10:39 PM PDT gue blon trlalu banyak nonton film2 martin scorsese. tapi casino salah satu favorit gue. ntar gue review2 yg laennya kalo uda dapet dvdsnya.
badu May 28, 2006 09:17 PM PDT Udah agak lupa ama film ini.
HoneyBee May 25, 2006 04:41 AM PDT i like this drama cause it's very gripping. violence hardly bothers me, it just level up the characteristics of the movie. IMHO.
indres May 24, 2006 06:42 AM PDT I like Sharon Stone here...However, my favorite Scorsese's movie is the age of innocence, the one that has less physical violence that the others.
Due to my hectic schedule, I will not be able to review all new movies every week. I apologize. I will however review some older movies from DVDs from time to time. Thank you for understanding.
Salute, -HoneyBee-
