Lucía y el sexo / Sex and Lucia

I've been wondering about the perception of love. Can you love someone unconditionally? And can you love someone even that person whom you love is making a mistake, whether in the past or present? Can you forgive 'em? Is love the only answer there is? I don't know any kind of that answer, actually...

Lucia (Paz Vega) receives bad news about Lorenzo (Tristian Ulloa), that there is a possibility that he commited suicide. Distraught, she moves alone to an isolated island, where she meets Carlos (Daniel Freire) and Elena (Najwa Nimri) who lives in a boarding house. The story shifts to six years ago; Lorenzo is a writer that has a writer's block and one day meets Lucia in a restaurant. They fall in love for each other and Lucia moves to his apartment. Later, Lorenzo is informed by his friend Pepe (Javier Cámara) that he has a daughter named Luna (Silvia Llanos), and he meets her in a playground with her baby sitter named Belén (Elena Anaya). From this point on, Lorenzo mixes his reveries with reality.

This movie is very unpredictable and sometimes left me wondering what would happened next. I was really pleasantly surprised to find out that this was actually a really good, if somewhat unacategoriseable film. I mean there is humor, there is drama, there is defintely some plot twists, obviously some sex scenes and it's thoroughly engaging all the way through. Although many complain about the gratuitous female nudity, and S-E-X. And I wondered the borderline between art movie with pornography. This movie have real sex scenes, instead one of those 'make-believe' sex like Basic Instinct. I am a bit surprised to see penis and vagina in all the glory in mainstream movie, especially up-close and personal. Mind you, I'm not against those particular things, but sometimes I questioned the meaning and the point for it. I guess unless it's necessary, sex scenes is needed. It's very hard to write about this movie in depth - the plot does twist a lot - clearly evident by my housemate who was definitely confused. I suspect this is because the premise of the film was to write a story where if you didn't like the ending, there was an escape hatch to return to the middle - which it did.

Now to the sex in the movie. It's very strong from the beginning, but besides it's explicitness it also deals with it very sensitively. The sex is arousing but meaningful too. Anyone who's been in a passionate relationship must be touched by the characters' sex life, leading toward an almost dangerous addiction. I wondered if the rest of their relationship was strong enough to pass the test of time though, sex seemed to be at the core of their love. The sex is the driving force in the movie and is pictured very realistically. Over the top, unnecessary would some people say. As a novelist myself, I deeply related to the movie's blurring of reality and imagination. Your characters MUST be real to you in order for them to live and breathe on the page, and so much of your own life goes into the characters that the lines of course do blur. And then there's the subconscious, which cannot differentiate between fantasy and reality. This movie understands all this very well, and its depiction of it is remarkable. Not recommedable to everyone, though. To those who are prude, stay out from this movie. I don't want you to get a heart attack, lol.
